Pesticides have been used for quite a while. Some decades ago people believed that crop failure and losses by pests could be avoided. Huge quantities have been produced and were delivered to many countries all around the globe. It happened the same as with PCBs, Asbestos and some other chemical products - they have been identified as toxic substances. Some pesticides belong as well to the 12 POPs and are banned world-wide. Only DDT has a speciality: it may be used in restricted areas where Malaria is quite common. There is no alternative today.
