Dioxins & Furans
These two extremely toxic classes of substances have various sources and are listed in the Stockholm Convention on POPs (persistent organic pollutents).
There has never been any commercial production. They are unintentional by-products in some chloro-organic processes, such as the production of PCB containing insulation liquids or the thermal treatment of chloro-organic substances.
A methodology, the tool kit, has been developed by UNEP Chemicals which is being used by countries to identify their sources of Dioxins and Furans and to quantify their releases to the environment. It is applied to make the national inventory acc. to the action plan within the NIP (National Implementation Plan) for the Stockholm convention on POPs. This tool kit is unique and not transferable to the other POPs. The financial investment is low but it requires some training to use it appropriate.
